Assessment of Land Suitability and Spatial Development Direction for Hevea Brasiliensis Cultivation in West Bandung Regency, Indonesia

Abstract

This study assesses land suitability and spatial development direction for rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) cultivation in West Bandung Regency, Indonesia, using a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based approach. A descriptive survey method was employed, integrating primary field data from 40 sample points and secondary data from maps, documents, and literature. Land suitability was evaluated based on physical factors including climate, soil type, slope, and water availability, using the matching technique with the maximum limitation method. The analysis identified 36,478.8 ha (29.50%) of land as suitable for rubber cultivation, with 26,950.6 ha classified as highly suitable (S1) and 9,528.2 ha as moderately suitable (S2). However, after considering land use designation and spatial planning (RTRW) regulations, the potential development area was refined to 21,234.728 ha (16.26% of the regency's total area). This refined area is not intended for exclusive rubber cultivation but serves as spatial guidance for farmers and policymakers interested in expanding rubber farming. The findings provide a biophysical and spatial basis for land use planning and rubber cultivation expansion in West Bandung Regency.
